Antiferromagnetic exchange interactions have been identified in thirteen new Cu(II) halide compounds, including a family of pyrazine and substituted pyrazine complexes, and two pseudo-polymorphic salts. Exchange interactions occur between Cu(II) ions through a variety of different exchange pathways, including bibridged exchange that occurs as a consequence of close Cu-X...Cu contacts, where X is either Cl or Br. A similar exchange pathway, termed two-halide exchange, occurs as a consequence of close Cu-X...X-Cu contacts. Moreover, weak exchange interactions are propagated by covalently bonded diamine ligands.

These exchange pathways have been utilized to generate four rectangular magnetic systems, one square magnetic system, and six new ladder systems. Through both experimental and theoretical work, the exchange pathways have been identified in these Cu(II) complexes. This has been accomplished using X-ray crystallography, magnetic measurements via a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID), high field magnetization, and electron paramagnetic resonance. Theoretical calculations were made using first-principles and quantum Monte Carlo methods.

The resulting complexes are physical realizations of rectangular, square, and ladder magnetic systems. Prototypical rectangular systems include Cu(pyrazine)Br 2 (2J/kB = -47.7(4) K and 2J' = -7(2) K) and Cu(pyrazine)C12( 2J/kB = -28.2(9) K, 2J/ kB = -9.9(14)). Additional rectangular systems include Cu(2,5-dimethylpyrazine)Br2 (2J/k B -275(9) K) and Cu(2,6-dimethylpyrazine)Br2 ( 2J/kB= -74.8(3) K, 2J'/ kB= 13.5(7) K). A square magnetic system (quinolinium) 2CuBr4·2H2O (2J/ kB = -6.17(3) K) is also included. Additionally, six new ladder complexes have been studied, including Cu(2,3-dimethylpyrazine)Br 2 (2J/kB = -28.4(3) K (rung), 2J'/kB = -21.4(4) K (rail)), Cu(2,3-dimethylpyrazine)Cl 2 (2J/kB = -28.4(3) K, 2J'/kB = -21.4(4) K (rail)), Cu(2-(methylthio)pyrazine)Br 2 (2J/kB = -39.79(17) K (rung), 2J'/kB = -18.0(4) K (rail)), Cu(2-(methylthio)pyrazine)Cl2 (2J/k B = -30.27(3) K (rung), 2J'/k B = -10.59(7) K (rail)), Cu(2-methylpyrazine)Br2 (2J/kB= -43.31(14) K (rung), 2J'/kB = -20.6(3) K (rail), and Cu(2-methylpyrazine)Cl 2 (2J/kB= -31.72(6) K, 2J'/kB = -14.02(12) K). Three additional compounds Cu(methylpyrazine)2Br2, Cu(2,5-dimethylpyrazine)Cl 2 and (quinolinium)2CuBr4 are also reported.
