Health information technology (HIT) has the potential for transforming healthcare delivery. The purpose of this study was to identify emerging categories and themes and to develop a framework to guide future HIT adoption. English-language literature indexed in PubMed, OvidSP, and EBSCOhost were searched for relevant randomized controlled trials (RCT) published since 2001. Of the 157 articles screened, 36 met the inclusion criteria and were included in the systematic review. The majority were clustered around chronic disease management, medical ordering processes, preventive care, and patient's involvement with care. Overall, 69% assessed impact of HIT in the outpatient settings and 17% assessed impact in the inpatient settings, 42% measured impact of decision support and 22% measured impact of electronic alert/reminder. The study yielded 10 emerging categories and 6 overarching themes, which expanded our understanding of ways HIT may improve quality and provided the foundation for developing a framework for HIT adoption.
