The first paper identifies hazardous ingredients comprising a set of cleaning products used in hospitals in Massachusetts. Hospitals use a wide range of cleaning products, some of which are also used for commercial and domestic cleaning. Additionally, this paper assesses the potential for airborne and dermal exposures from common cleaning tasks. It was concluded that cleaning products are complex mixtures including hazardous ingredients such as irritants and sensitizers. Worker's inhalation and dermal exposures to these hazardous ingredients may occur when cleaning tasks are performed. Both inhalation and dermal exposures are important routes of exposures from cleaning activities, therefore both should be considered in exposure assessments for both epidemiologic studies and workplace control.

The second paper assesses quantitatively airborne exposures to volatile organic compounds (VOC) from products identified in the first paper. VOC exposures were measured during simulations of a set of cleaning tasks. It is concluded that several measurement methods are needed to quantify exposures to cleaning agents, due to the wide range of physical properties and volatilities in the mixture. Total VOC (TVOC) measurements with direct reading instruments (DRI) can be useful for assessment of exposure to cleaning products with limitations. Average concentrations of TVOC measured for 10 minutes of cleaning tasks ranged from 0.14ppm--11ppm. Average concentrations of 2-butoxyethanol during 20 minutes of cleaning tasks ranged from 0.30--21 ppm. TVOC concentration profiles of time since first exposure through task cessation and decay to background levels showed that 10--20 minutes may be required for the exposures to diminish fully. These findings suggest that workers (cleaners, doctors, nurses, technicians) and patients who enter a room shortly after cleaning may also be exposed to airborne contaminants.

The third paper investigated the hypothesis that the airborne concentration of a single volatile ingredient (2-butoxyethanol) in a cleaning product could be predicted using statistical models with TVOC measurements and other environmental and human factors. This study showed that real time measurements of TVOC can be used to predict airborne 2-butoxyethanol (2-BE) concentrations from cleaning exposures when data on product type and the room volume and ventilation are also collected. The prediction model explained a significant portion of the data variability in both TVOC average (R2=68%) and TVOC maximum measures (R=72%). In addition, it was found that 2-BE concentrations can be well predicted without TVOC measurements, with a model of the product type, task performed, product concentration, room volume and ventilation status (R2=0.77). Both models could be independently used for workplace exposure assessment and for epidemiologic surveys.
