Thesis (M.A.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2008.
This thesis examines the controversy which erupted within Lakota communities following the March 2006 attempt by the South Dakota state legislature to ban abortion across the state. My specific concern is with the role of religiosity in the shaping of modern Lakota identity; I therefore offer a close analysis of the discursive formations which emerged in response to the public promulgation of abortion discourse, paying particular attention to the ways in which political claims are advanced by Lakota representatives through appeals to the sacred and claims to religious authority. In terms of negotiating and announcing Lakota identities within the political terrain of contemporary culture, I consider how the discursive performances of Lakota representatives become means by which particular versions of the Lakota past are activated for the purposes of the present and how we might think about the ways in which these competing versions of Lakota history and tradition function today.
