In 2005 and 2006, a national project was undertaken by the Wyoming Survey & Analysis center (WYSAC), along with other University of Wyoming departments. The goal of the project was to help determine the most appropriate price for a new annual pass for recreation on federal lands. A significant portion of the project was a national telephone survey administered in the spring of 2006.

520 $a The telephone questionnaire was constructed primarily with closed-ended questions. However, in order to ascertain less common answers, several questions allowed for open-ended responses. As a part of the project, the responses to open-ended items in the survey about reasons for purchasing an annual pass were categorized by the author of this thesis with the help of a software tool (the SPSS Text Analysis module) that uses an artificial intelligence engine. The same general content domain was also addressed in the survey with several closed-ended questions, but no analysis was undertaken to compare the open-ended and closed-ended results. This thesis provides a descriptive case study in the use of the Text Analysis tool, and compares results obtained from the two distinct types of measurement in survey research.
