In this study, the role of attachment style and resilience (optimism, locus of control, and self-efficacy) were explored in attempting to predict adjustment to college in college freshmen. A total of 1190 college freshmen (405 males, 785 females) participated in the first level of this research. Data were collected in two stages, initially during a new student orientation session prior to the onset of fall semester. The second level of data collection took place during the second semester, with 433 (107 males, 326 females) of the original 1190 students responding. For the purposes of this study, adjustment to college was defined by: first semester grade-point average, scores on each of the four subscales of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire, number of conduct infractions while living in on-campus residence halls, and enrollment in the second semester. Regression analyses were performed both with and without inclusion of high school grade-point average, ACT score, and level of life stress as covariates. Findings revealed attachment style did not predict any of the aspects of adjustment to college. In contrast, resilience was found to be a significant and better predictor than the covariates (high school grade-point average, ACT score, and level of life stress) of the aspects of adjustment to college measured by each of the four subscales on the SACQ.
