Thesis (Ph.D.)--Howard University, 1997.
The study explored the relationship of anxiety, locus of control and hope to career indecision among African American college students. More specifically, the study investigated (a) career indecision among African American college students; (b) the relationship of anxiety, locus of control and hope to career indecision; (c) gender differences in career indecision within this group; (d) the relationship of career indecision to high school career exploration and (e) the predictive value of anxiety, locus of control and hope to career indecision. Two hundred forty-four freshman and sophomore students from intact classes at two historically Black institutions in South Carolina were participants. During designated class sessions, students were administered the (a) Student Questionnaire, (b) Career Decision Scale, (c) Multidimensional Locus of Control Scale, (d) State-Trait Anxiety Inventory, and (e) The Hope Scale. Descriptive statistics, t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson correlational analysis and multiple regression were used to analyze the data. Results of correlational analysis indicated that state anxiety and both external dimensions of locus of control, powerful others and chance, were significantly related to career indecision. Based on multiple regression analysis, there was also a significant gender difference in career indecision scores. Males scored higher than females within this group of African American College students. Separate regression analyses of female and male participants' scores indicated that the powerful others dimension of locus of control accounted for a significant amount of variance in career indecision scores. However, for female participants, the pathways dimension of hope accounted for a significant, but inverse, variance in career indecision scores. As pathways scores increased, indecision scores decreased. Powerful others locus of control and state anxiety emerged as the best predictors of career indecision for this group of African American college students.
