Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of San Francisco, 1997.
The literature examining the relationship between depression and locus of control has produced inconsistent findings. Although the literature reported the relationship between depression and external locus of control has been substantiated in numerous studies, other studies revealed a small, inconsistent correlation between depression and external locus of control. This study explored the potential relationship among such factors as the client's physical and psychological wellness, their level of depression, personality characteristics including their perception and orientation toward internal versus external locus of control, their social support, resources and coping skills as variables to be considered when examining disability. Depression as measured by the Beck Depression Scale (BDI) and internal-external locus of control as measured by the Rotter Internal-External Scale (LOC) were examined in assess how these variables related to length of time before a disabled worker returned to work.

The participants were 27 females and 60 males (professionals, paraprofessionals, and laborers), who were injured in the course of their employment and, as a result of their disability, were referred for psychological evaluation. The data analyzed for this study were gathered from closed patient fields.

A multiple regression analysis and correlation coefficients were used to evaluate patient data and the participants' responses to determine the extent of the relationship between the independent variables of the subjects' scores on the BDI and LOC, demographic variables of education, marital status, and vocation, and the dependent variable, the length of time off work.

The results of this study did not confirm the trend noted in the literature that a relationship exists between depression and locus of control. Rather, the results support the inconsistent correlation between depression and locus of control. Correlation coefficients obtained between length of time off work, level of education, vocation, and marital status revealed individuals in the paraprofessional and professional management categories demonstrated a negative relationship with disability, whereas laborers showed a positive relationship with disability. Variables not considered in this archival study that may have influenced the workers' BDI and LOC scores include an individual's social support, personal resources, helplessness, severity of the injury, employer attitude toward accommodating a disabled worker, and physician attitudes toward early return-to-work.
