Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), is believed to involve chronic activation and dysfunction of the immune system. It is characterized by disabling flu, muscle and cognitive symptoms. There is no known cure for CFS and no definitive laboratory test for diagnosis. The problem under investigation is whether those who see themselves in control of their CFS, function on a higher level than those who tend to perceive that outside forces are in control.

This study investigates the relationship between health status and locus of control in this CFS population. The Multidimensional Health Locus of Control Scale (MHLC) Form C was used to determine a subject's belief in: (a) "Internal" locus of control; a belief that one's disease can be controlled through the action of the subject, and three external orientations: (a) "chance/luck/fate" external locus of control; a belief that a disease is controlled by these three factors. (b) "Doctors" external locus of control; indicating the degree of belief in health care professionals, (c) "Other People" external locus of control, indicating the degree of belief in "powerful other people" to control one's disease, such as a spouse, parent, or employer.

Positive correlations between subjects with a higher internal locus of control and higher reported health functioning were found, confirming the study hypothesis. An unexpected finding revealed a significant difference between the CFS group and all other chronic illness groups in the degree of belief in health care professionals, indicating a relative lack of faith in the medical profession. Compared to other chronic illness groups, and healthy controls, the CFS group had significantly lower internal locus of control scores. It was concluded that internal types of coping strategies might benefit CFS patients by increasing perceptions of control and diminishing feelings of helplessness.
