This study sought to understand the ways in which artists' feelings of self-validation directly support their motivation to make art. It was asked, what intrinsic self-validating benefits do artists derive from making particular works of art? In this context, self-validation is the act of affirming one's self, determining the degree of truth or validity by a measure of one's own devising.

Two sets of collaborative interviews were conducted with six artists around particular works of art over a five-year period. The qualitative case studies were then coded and analyzed. The artists' comments were centered around the works of art and presented in individual narratives that reflected each artist's intrinsic motivations.

The components of self-validation that emerged from the analysis became the building blocks that, when taken together, created a richer more complex definition of self-validation. It was discovered that the essence of this deeper understanding of self-validation lies in the complex relationship between the artists and their works. Artists' comments revealed a relationship between intrinsic motivation and self-validation and confirmed that motivation is found within the process of art making.

These new understandings and the concept of self-validation can be relevant to educators seeking to support young people's creativity and self-actualization, and their need to form their own values in relation to the world. Another significant educational application of this study is the centrality of the artists to the research. Given the new consciousness of the possibilities of artists' contributions to art education, this study provides a model of interview methods for art education researchers interested in eliciting information from artists.
