Thesis (M.S.En.E.)--University of Arkansas, 2008.
The set up and acclimation period for biofiltration was examined to determine differences in TOC removal between different treatments. A staged biofilter and a biofilter acclimated with raw water were compared to a standard biofilter acclimated with water treated by coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation and two control filters that filtered tap water during the acclimation phase, one with exhausted GAC and one with fresh GAC. The control filter with fresh GAC showed the only significantly different TOC removal, while the control filter with exhausted GAC had similar removals compared to the biofilters. The biofilter acclimated with raw water, however, did prove to have more biological activity than that of the other biofilters but without an increase in TOC removal. All filters had similar effluent quality in terms of turbidity. This study revealed that for the source water used, biofiltration has limited applications in that TOC removed was most likely due to coagulation, flocculation, and filtration processes not biological degradation.
