Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Wisconsin - Madison, 2008.
Genetic improvement of traits related to the survival and welfare of newborn calves have been overlooked for a long time in dairy cattle breeding. Time, labor and money dedicated to rearing healthy calves are quantifiable only in the long term and calves are often perceived by farmers as a cost rather than an investment. In addition, data regarding calf health, welfare and survival are scarce are and not routinely collected, newborn calves have therefore limited information available around the time of birth. Nonetheless, evidence is accumulating in the literature regarding the influence of early stages of a calf's life on its subsequent productive life as a cow. In this thesis different genetics aspects related to the health of newborn calves were investigated. In the first study, genetic factors affecting suckling behavior and attainment of immune competency in newborn calves were investigated. According to our results, selection to increase suckling ability might be possible. In the second study we investigated the use of crossbreeding as a genetic management tool to improve characters related to the health of newborn. Results of our study suggest that crossbreeding may be an important management tool to improve calf health and survival. Finally in the third study, a genome scan aiming to detect regions of the genome underlying quantitative trait loci for traits related to calf health was performed. In this study we demonstrated that potential regions underlying QTL for traits related to the health, welfare, and survival of newborn calves are segregating in the two most popular dairy breeds of North America and could potentially be exploited for marker assisted selection.
