In the present study, the psychometric properties of four cultural values scales---the Familism Scales of Bardis and of Sabogal, Marin, Otero-Sabogal & Perez-Stable, the Cultural Justification for Caregiving Scale, and the Traditional Caregiving Ideology Scale---were analyzed in a sample of 161 African American and 118 European American dementia caregivers and noncaregivers. The study compared the psychometric properties of each of the measures to previously reported findings, and explored possible future uses of the scale items in dementia research. Two of the scales---the Bardis Familism Scale and the Sabogal et al. Familism Scale---were analyzed for structural and factorial invariance. Initial confirmatory factor analysis of the hypothesized two-factor structure of the Bardis Familism Scale yielded a model that fit the data across the two groups, although group variation in factor loadings was revealed. Subsequent confirmatory factor analysis was conducted with the Bardis Familism Scale. Tests for invariance of the three-factor Sabogal et al. structure revealed a model that fit the data and was invariant across both groups. Exploratory factor analysis was conducted with all the items from four measures of cultural values, to identify possible cultural values underlying the four caregiving cultural values scales.

This study's findings contribute to the literature on cultural reasons for providing care to dependent family members with dementia. It provides data on the invariance of two familism cultural values measures across ethnic groups, and has important implications for future research into the use of assessment instruments cross-culturally to assess for cultural values within the subject area of dementia caregiving.
