The present study addressed the disruptive effects of intrafamilial abuse and of alcoholic parent behavior on perceived adult adjustment and life satisfaction in gay/lesbian and non-gay/lesbian adult children of alcoholics (ACOAs). Participants for the study consisted of volunteers (N&barbelow; = 444) from three primary sources: (1) study sites established nationwide with volunteer members of the National Association of Lesbian and Gay Alcoholism Professionals (NALGAP) as site coordinators, (2) several Cleveland area private practice patient caseloads, and (3) local self-help group attendees at ACOA and Al-Anon 12-step group meetings.

Study findings indicate that parental problem drinking, abuse, and parent behavior while under the influence have a long-term impact on development in ACOAs and gay and lesbian individuals and support previous research results which found significant differences between ACOAs and non-ACOAs. This research also offers a preliminary explanation as to why some studies have not found differences between ACOAs and non-ACOAs. As an initial investigation of the effects of abuse on adjustment and life satisfaction in ACOA and non-ACOA adults, this research indicates that differences exist between those who were and were not abused. Those who reported abuse also reported poorer perceived adjustment as adults, regardless of ACOA status or sexual orientation, when compared to those who did not report abuse.

This study also supports those researchers who have contended that having an alcoholic parent may not be the single most important factor in the development of later problems in ACOAs. The degree to which a family is disrupted by problem drinking may be the most important predictor of poorer adjustment and life satisfaction in ACOAs and in gays and lesbians. The current research also highlights the degree to which disrupted family functioning affects gay and lesbian perceived adult adjustment. It also supports the need to further investigate the effects of abuse on ACOA and gay and lesbian functioning, especially as this relates to sexual abuse and life satisfaction.
