Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of South Carolina, 2007.
The completion of sequencing the human genome in 2003 created new avenues and increased frequency in the diagnoses of genetic conditions. Despite extensive literature in genetic research, there is a void when it comes to the psychosocial impact of genetic conditions on individuals and families. This study adds to the understanding of the multi-systemic interactions between an individual's genetic information and their environment.

The purpose of this study was to explore identity formation in women who have been diagnosed with Turner syndrome, a genetic condition unique to women. Twelve young women with Turner syndrome between the ages of 18 and 27 participated in taped semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed and analyzed using three models: (1) grounded theory (2) analysis of performance and (3) discrete life story content analysis.

Grounded theory methods captured the theoretical nature of the data. Case analysis of performance captured how the participants performed their identities. Discrete life story content analysis identified specific themes of agency and communion, and sequences of redemption and contamination. The study identified areas that need to be addressed in social work, education, and health care and makes recommendations for research and practice.
