- 139 p.
Adviser: Richard Raspa.
Thesis (M.I.S.)--Wayne State University, 2008.
Historical, economic, sociological, and technological perspectives are used in this thesis to demonstrate the erosion of professional control occurring in the field of medicine. Doctors are no longer permitted to practice medicine as they see fit. The roles of the pharmaceutical industry, managed care, government policy makers, and the legal profession are examined as they relate to this erosion of professional sovereignty. The reasons for rising health care costs are explored along with the failing efficacy of medicine's disease-based treatment paradigm. A new paradigm called Regenerative Medicine will emerge to better address the chronic diseases of modern society and restore the doctor-patient relationship. Bolstered by the recent advances in the Human Genome Project, Regenerative Medicine is poised to acknowledge our bio-individuality. The days of "one size fits all" medicine are numbered. Medications and treatments will be tailor made for each patient based on genetic and environmental factors. We will soon be able to treat disease before it manifests as morphologic changes.
