Thesis (M.A.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2008.
The Shingon-risshu temple named Renge-In Tanjoji of Kumamoto Prefecture, Tamana City holds as its primary object of devotion a relatively obscure historical figure named Ajari Koen (d. 1169), a Tendai monk who is said to have been a mountain ascetic, dragon-deity, and Bodhisattva. In the following pages I demonstrate that the Renge-In narrative of Koen's multiple identities not only epitomizes the combinatory Japanese Common Religion, but that through the ritual and architectural engagement and enactment of these various identities this narrative serves as an important object of devotion in its own right. The methodologies employed to prove this thesis include a descriptive analysis of various temple festivals centered upon the complex grafting of Koen's identities and a translation and analysis of the Fuso ryujinden, a popular-press graphic novel, or manga, version of Koen's hagiography.
