This geophysical survey utilized five geophysical methods (electrical resistance, electromagnetic conductivity, magnetic susceptibility, ground penetrating radar, and magnetic gradiometry) to characterize the shallow subsurface of 0.52 hectares at the Double Ditch site (13OB8) in O'Brien County, Iowa. The goals of this survey were to more thoroughly define the village boundaries and identify subsurface archaeological features, consider the plausibility of using geophysical data to test hypotheses at late prehistoric villages, and evaluate the potential of the geophysical methods for research at other late prehistoric settlements in Iowa. All of the project goals were met with positive results. Through the use of geophysical techniques the village boundaries were defined and subsurface features were detected and identified, including several houses. These data were shown to be useful in investigating hypotheses regarding Plains village composition, organization, and duration of occupation. 13OB8 is now known to be comprised of a perimeter fortification system that encloses an area of 1800 m2 containing several likely house structures organized in rows and with a common orientation. Several additional houses are suggested by these data, as are several entryways into the village. These data also suggest a greater duration of occupation than what was previously hypothesized with evidence of at least two building episodes. Geophysical methods appear to have great potential for similar research at other late prehistoric sites in northwestern Iowa and the surrounding area. It is believed that similar and subsequent studies of this nature will make a significant contribution to the knowledge and understanding of the archaeological record in this area while preserving it for the future.
