Thesis (Ed.D.)--Nova Southeastern University, 2006.
This applied dissertation addressed the evaluation of staff development training at the university library. Before this study, it was unknown if the staff development database training program designed for library faculty and staff was meeting its goals. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of the library's staff development training program by assessing the participants' perceptions of the worth of the training workshops and their subsequent effect on their job performance.

Survey questionnaires were used to answer the following 5 research questions: What other academic libraries were doing to satisfy the staff development needs of their library faculty and staff?, What were the training needs of the library staff as online searchers?, Do the staff development training workshops meet the objectives of the training program?, To what extent do the library staff participants rate their satisfaction level with the current staff development training program?, and What recommendations for improvement can be made to the library's staff development training program following evaluation?

Two surveys were developed from an extensive review of the literature and input from formative and summative committee members. Surveys were sent to 12 academic libraries similar in size and geographic location to obtain useful information regarding their staff training programs. Another survey was distributed to library faculty and staff who participated in the database training workshops conducted at the university library to determine the effectiveness of the training.

An analysis of the data revealed that the academic libraries surveyed conducted lectures, hands-on, and remote database training sessions to satisfy the training needs of their library faculty and staff. In addition, they conducted makeup, refresher, and mentoring sessions. Data collected from the library training survey questionnaires showed the majority of the library participants indicated their staff training needs as online searchers were to develop search strategies and sharpen their searching skills and were generally satisfied with the database training workshops.

It was recommended that follow-up review sessions and mentoring be offered after each training workshop, and training sessions be scheduled more often, for a longer period of time, and in smaller groups as well as the distribution of detailed handouts to be used as reference tools in the future. Further, research should be conducted every 2 years to measure the success of the database training program and its impact on learner success in the workplace.
