This dissertation investigated English as a Second Language (ESL) and non-English as a Second Language (Non-ESL) students' attitudes towards learning accounting and instructors teaching strategies in college.

This research included a quantitative research approach, self-answering for students' academic performance with midterm exams, overall GPA, and major GPA. This study measured both ESL and non-ESL accounting students' learning attitudes towards the seven components in learning accounting: interest, importance, lecture, discussion, group learning, case studies, and technology in accounting classes. The survey was formulated by doctoral candidates in Educational Administration, Leadership and Technology at Dowling College. A survey was conducted at a state university on Long Island and was sent to three accounting classes: financial accounting, managerial accounting, and intermediate accounting. Fifty-five ESL and fifty-five non-ESL accounting students completed the survey and provided a conceptual framework for the study. The survey sought to identify levels of interest and importance in learning accounting and instructional strategies. In addition, it sought to determine the correlation between interest and importance towards instructional strategies with ESL and non-ESL accounting students' learning attitudes. The findings suggested that interest and importance in learning accounting related greater with lecture, case studies, and technology. ESL and non-ESL accounting students reported a lower correlation with group learning and technology in classes.

The study recommended that accounting instructors should continuously improve their teaching for the accounting students who speak different languages with different educational backgrounds. The business department must express significant interest to pursue a variety of changes in accounting curricula.

Based on this study, accounting classes did not focus on writing, reading and technology as part of important instructional strategies. However, students need to have frequent opportunities to utilize and improve their written and reading communication skills. The business and accounting department should consider technology as part of the business curriculum to improve students' computer and technology skills. Technology uses in accounting courses should include spread sheets, power point, and accounting software to increase students' learning experiences. Additionally, the accounting and business department should offer assistance to help students to improve their communication and technology skills in the English Learning Center. The assistance includes tutoring, writing, reading, computer skills, and placement testing towards academic success.
