The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an audiovisual virtual reality system (VR) on the reduction of dental anxiety in endodontic patients. Three instruments were used to assess dental anxiety: the Dental Anxiety Scale, the instrument most often used as a global measure of dental anxiety; the Dental Fear Survey, which measures biological, behavioral, and experiential aspects of dental phobias; and the Dental Belief Survey to assess patients' perceived interactions with dentists. Forty endodontic patients were randomly assigned to either a control or experimental group. Each group completed pre and post-operative questionnaires, including a demographic survey. The experimental group underwent endodontic treatment while viewing nature-related scenes with an audiovisual virtual reality system. The control group underwent endodontic treatment without the audiovisual virtual reality system. Results of the study revealed that patients who utilized VR treatment during endodontic therapy experienced significantly less anxiety as reported on the Dental Anxiety Scale. Results also revealed a significant increase in positive interactions with the endodontist as reported on the Dental Belief Survey. Patients who underwent endodontic therapy with VR did not report a significant reduction in fear, as measured by the Dental Fear Survey.
