Considering the lack of Filipino American texts in the nation's literary canon, the object of this study is to discover how this ignored literary group has represented the self in autobiographical texts of this century. Chapter 1 offers several different types of theoretical and historical contexts for the study of Filipino American autobiography. Chapter 2 surveys shared characteristics of language and literature as well as social and historical influences evident in the autobiographies. Chapter 3 explores key categories of work experience, community, and identity which surface as a result of an application of certain postcolonial questions upon the autobiographies. The conclusion emphasizes that these literatures are invaluable to the American literary canon and must be recognized as such.*
