Thesis (Ph.D.)--Columbia University, 1999.
This dissertation examines the representation of Ophelia in British art in a feminist context and asserts that images of the character were integral to the construction of feminine social roles (daughter, sister, lover), which were subject to cultural conflict and continually in flux between 1740 and 1910. To this end, images of Ophelia are analyzed within an interdisciplinary framework that includes discussion of the editing of Hamlet and Shakespearean criticism; the history of the performance of the play; the importance of actresses in the role of Ophelia; art criticism and practice; other visual representations of feminine social roles; the appropriation of Ophelia as a model of pathology by Victorian psychiatrists; and cultural attitudes toward suicide by drowning. The dissertation is arranged thematically by scene and follows the trajectory of Ophelia's life and death in Hamlet so as to provide the reader with a coherent analysis of the feminine roles the character embodies and her context within the play; chronological assessment of representational shifts is also considered. The great variety of visual material included for discussion ranges from renowned paintings exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art such as John Everett Millais's Ophelia (RA 1852) to photographs by Julia Margaret Cameron to the work of lesser known artists such as Henrietta Rae and Anna Lea Merritt to book illustration and drawings.
