And then there are questions of methodology. Geography is the study of places; human geography the study of people affected by places. What can geography offer such an investigation? What can Phenomenology--the study of being in place and time?

This study of three Irish writers and the Irish landscape asks several questions: Of what significance is the land in which we dwell or dwelt when young? What meanings can that space have to us? And what relation have those meanings to our sense of the people who reside on that landscape, or of its historical and religious associations? And how do we organize our impressions? Of what are made our mental maps?

Other, subordinate questions may be posed: Why, in an effort to answer such questions, should Ireland be the focus of investigation? And why Ireland at the turn of the century? And why these particular writers--Emily Lawless, George Moore, and J. M. Synge?

The conclusions of this investigation are that while nationalist and aesthetic interests may have initiated each writer's probe of landscape, those considerations prove to be much less significant than the lifelong associations of individual and place. Numerous conflicting responses to place emerge: between public evaluation and the complex assessment of the native; between response to people and to topography; between claustrophobia and self enclosure, and a sense of potentiality and love; between the judgement of land as a social world and as an emblem of an individual's private life. Although J. M. Synge, unlike Lawless or Moore, chose the place with which he would become identified, rather than being born into it, his interpretations of the landscape are characterized by tensions and contradictions simiilar to those of the older generation.
