The impact of media on adolescents has been a topic of interest for many researchers. Particularly, the interest in exploring variables related to the degradation and sexualization of Black women in rap music videos has steadily increased over the past decade. Researchers suggested that low body image, increased sexual behavior, and more permissive attitudes towards premarital sex are related to increased viewing of rap music videos with sexualized images of women. The work of these researchers also suggests that images of Black women in rap music videos may serve as behavioral models for Black female adolescents.

Using several self-report instruments, 69 Black college women attending a historically Black university participated in this study. Findings of this investigation suggest that a relationship exists between accepting a personal and positive definition of womanhood and positive body image and that a relationship exists between having a definition of womanhood that is personal and positive and negative attitudes towards images of Black women in rap music videos and ability to perceive sexual stereotypes in rap music videos. These findings may have important implications for both research and therapeutic practice when considering the potential impact of images of Black women in rap music videos and the development of body image in Black female adolescents.
