Adoption: A multi-cultural reproductive strategy examined through the evolution of human behavior.
- 52 p.
Adviser: John Patton.
Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fullerton, 2008.
Much research has explored adoptive and fosterage practices from a psychological or social aspect with a paucity of research examining these behaviors from an evolutionary perspective. Adoption and fosterage as a reproductive strategy examines reproductive efforts as an optimal fitness strategy. A multi-cultural analysis of public data sets will be used to assess the phenomena of adoption and foster care. This study incorporates inclusive fitness and parental investment models to understand the motives pertaining to parental relinquishment decisions as well as non-biological parent's motives influencing adoption and fosterage behaviors. Quantitative data sets from the Australian Bureau of Statistics, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, AFCARS Report, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reports (MMWR), National Statistics of England and Wales as well as the information and Statistics Division (ISD) of Scotland are analyzed. This study will explore empirical data to explain adoption and fosterage practices as a reproductive strategy as well as further the discourse of Evolutionary Anthropology.
