All life has a rhythm. We live, we love, and we die in time and space all according to our own individual rhythms. There are times in life when our rhythms intermingle with others and cause changes. Acting changed my life's rhythm and it is my desire to change the lives of others through theatre. Theatre has the ability to change its audience's opinions, attitude, and lives by telling the stories of humankind. My thesis will focus on how theatre can be used as a tool to incite social change. As an actor, I am attracted to projects with social significance, either as a commentary on social, political or spiritual conditions, or a personal story of someone who is affected by social, political or spiritual circumstances. I was drawn to Kia Corthron's play Cage Rhythm because of its social commentary. This play is about the daily lives and personal struggles of incarcerated women. Director Nefertiti Burton explains:The play concentrates on [the inmate's] individual struggles to maintain their dignity and humanity, but also brings to life hard-hitting observations of race, gender and class inequities on issues such as drug laws and unfair sentencing. Corthron's plays take socio-political issues head on.1

Through my acting training in graduate school I have learned how to use my voice and body to tell the story of the characters I portray. I have also found a passion for telling stories that are significant to society and the world we live in. I have found a passion for using theatre as a tool to help change the world ... or at least opinions, attitudes and lives in the world. My life's rhythm is connected to telling the stories of others.

The thesis is divided into seven chapters, covering my acting training in graduate school, research and preparation for my performance in Cage Rhythm, and my contributions to theatre for social change. Chapter One covers my acting style and process before entering graduate school. Chapters Two and Three cover my training in the Theatre Arts MFA program. Chapter Two focuses specifically on vocal strengths and weaknesses, my vocal development through training, and specific roles that were vocally challenging for me. Chapter Three focuses on how I overcame movement challenges and my developing acting process. Chapter Four covers the research, preparation and the rehearsal process for the role of Avery in Cage Rhythm---including the research materials that were helpful in character analysis and development. Chapter Five critiques my overall performance in Cage Rhythm. Chapter Six examines theatre theorist Bertolt Brecht's influence on my acting process. The thesis concludes with Chapter Seven, which looks at my future as a theatre artist.
