Thesis (D.M.A.)--University of California, Los Angeles, 2008.
As artists consider how to unite the audience and performer through broad types of performance, artists must begin thinking beyond the realms of principles and music revered by traditionalists. This refers to music and performances that rarely figure into the course of study in traditional schools of music, such as those that involve collaborations outside of the traditional school of music. The term "interdisciplinary" has nationally become a rallying cry for such progressive creativity, as practitioners in fields of study such as music, dance, drama, and art eagerly encourage and pursue collaborations outside of traditional study.

This dissertation contains three sections which can stand alone separately, but the combination serves as a starting point for future discussions regarding re-evaluation of the 19th century methods of education currently being taught to a 21st century set of students in a world where capitalism dictates what should survive. Under the blanket of interdisciplinary education and performance the three parts here are as follows: part one focuses upon research, part two, the creation of a theater piece for the purpose of this dissertation, and part three presents a challenge to future educators to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches to expand a musician's options as they exit higher education and continue their craft.

The study begins with an introduction to theater pieces, which includes elements of theater pieces, definitions, examples, and even examines performances while looking at the phenomenon of separation of artists from collaborative interdisciplinary events of the past. Part one continues with historical relationships from the Avant-garde period and spotlights two specific performer/composers for trombone theater pieces: Abbie Conant and James Miller.

Part two focuses upon "The Last Tango," a theater piece for euphonium and performer, which uses interdisciplinary types of processes and collaborations for its creation. This piece (created for the purpose of this dissertation), serves as a proof-of-concept for my larger argument: there is a vital need for musicians to integrate creative, interdisciplinary, personal, and entrepreneurial solutions into their musical pursuits.

Part three entitled "The Challenge" discusses the education of interdisciplinary performers. Topics include an examination of interdisciplinary education in primary and post-secondary education, musicians being performer/composers, skill expansion (acting, singing, improvisation, composition, media), and musicians as entrepreneurs. It also includes a sample curriculum for an undergraduate music major degree with a more interdisciplinary approach.
