Thesis (M.S.)--University of Houston, 2008.
Background. Cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) is negatively associated with pediatric overweight. Appropriateness of existing CRF field tests for overweight children is unclear. Purpose. (1) Determine if the FITNESSGRAMRTM PACER is a suitable test for overweight children. (2) Assess the efficacy of a modified PACER test in overweight and normal-weight children. Methods. Thirty-nine overweight and sixteen normal-weight Hispanic children (age 7-12 years) performed the PACER and modified PACER tests. Outcomes included number of taps, duration, and heart rate. Results. Overweight children performed worse on both tests compared to normal-weight controls. Both groups performed better on the modified PACER versus the PACER. Starting heart rate was higher on the PACER compared to the modified PACER for both groups. Peak heart rate did not differ between tests for either group. Conclusions. These results suggest that the PACER test is not an appropriate field test of aerobic fitness for overweight children. The modified PACER appears to be a viable alternative.
