Medicine is becoming more of a science than an art. Continued aggressive medical intervention is more of a burden than a benefit for some patients. The misuse of scarce resources in the intensive care unit (ICU) is in a critical state. The current structure of the healthcare system does not allow good triage process within a hospital setting, thereby causing negative patient outcomes.

520 $a Through the lens of critical social theory, this research asserts the need for physician empowerment to bring about change in the healthcare system. This case study examines outcomes of patients admitted to the MICU at an urban tertiary care hospital and assessed their priority levels, using a prospective chart review study design.
520 $a This study show a decrease in quality of life for patients considered inappropriate admissions to the ICU and an increase in mortality (90.9%) for these patients. Average bed cost of inappropriate admits were $1 ,034,700 whereas appropriate admits were $5 22,600. In conclusion, physician empowerment is necessary to increase alternatives to ICU admission and better patient outcomes.
