Vision is important for the courtship behavior of Drosophila melanogaster males. During courtship, the male orients towards the female, follows her as she moves, and directs courtship behaviors to certain regions of the female's anatomy, behaviors that have been shown to rely on visual cues. The male specific forms of Fruitless (FruM) have been shown to be necessary and sufficient for generating male courtship behavior. We have identified a fru enhancer element that marks about 22 FruM-expressing cells in the medulla of the optic lobes, a part of the brain that processes visual information. We show that the cells in which this enhancer, which we term fru vOL, is functioning are found in males, but not in females, and that these cells are positioned to receive both color and visual inputs. When these fruvOL neurons are feminized, males have trouble following females and take longer to initiate copulation than controls. These defects suggest that these neurons are involved in the transfer of visual information pertinent to courtship.
