Although the narrative of the past (recent or distant, yesterday or centuries ago) had for generations attracted the attention of the Mankind, the mechanisms behind its telling, or writing for that matter, could not always share the benefits of this vivid interest. The present study has two basic purposes: on the one hand, it aims to investigate the nature of historywriting and discuss some essential questions of the process in universal terms; on the other hand, it tries to write a history related to a specific chapter of Human existence on Earth, with references to the findings of the above-mentioned questions. In other words, there is ideally theory and practice here, working together or a combination of the theoretical and empirical dimensions.

520 $a To set the spatial and temporal boundaries, the geography in question is Turkey and the chronology covers mainly the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, but the author was not shy at all to take a few intellectual journeys necessitated by the critical choices of the project in the course of time, which go beyond these conventional limitations.
520 $a Considering the work in its totality, it is fair to note that debates centered around the historical evolution of nationalism, the role of belief systems in human life, the definition of a "East-West" dichotomy accentuated particularly in the recent centuries, the formation of the state in its modern and pre-modern variants and finally, the position of the intellectuals before all these factors in constant interaction constitute the main axes of this academic enterprise.
