Thesis (M.A.)--University of Arkansas, 2008.
This study was designed to discover how viewers' perceptions of credibility, believability, historical accuracy, and portrayal of African American characters would differ based on the use of documentary versus docudrama techniques. The participants in the study watched film clips from either a documentary or a docudrama. Both film clips were based on an actual historical event in which three people attempting to assist African American citizens in Mississippi register to vote were killed. Participants were then asked to report their perceptions of credibility, believability, historical accuracy, and portrayal of African Americans. The results suggest filmmaking techniques influenced perceptions of credibility and perceptions of historical accuracy. The differing genres failed to produce significant differences with respect to perceptions of believability or portrayal of African Americans. Implications are discussed.
