Thesis (Ph.D.)--Northcentral University, 2008.
This dissertation summarizes research to develop a Grounded Theory about the development and treatment of male domestic violence from the data of six case studies of male domestic violence offenders. The theory, called normality through abnormality, is based on conceptual commonalities between the participants that emerged from long narrative videotaped interviews with therapeutic and video feedback. The study of these six cases revealed that an inner signal of abnormality triggers immediate response mechanisms to normalize the situation during crisis. The normalizing through abnormalizing dynamic may be manifested by domestic violence, especially in men whose neurological systems have been adversely affected by maltreatment, neglect, or other trauma as children, affecting rage and impulse control, and cannot be treated through cognitive interventions alone. Such men in court-referred Batterers Intervention Programs (BIPs) need professional mental health treatment with comprehensive depth psychology and holistic interventions utilized with cognitive behavioral therapies for effective recovery.
