Thesis (M.A.)--Dalhousie University (Canada), 2008.
Our thesis explores the fragmentation and reconstruction of the family as they are represented in the Quebec novel of the 1990's. To this end, we concentrate on eight contemporary novels by Bruno Hebert, Nancy Huston, Sergio Kokis, Jacques Marchand, Helene Monette, Yan Muckle, Lise Tremblay and Elise Turcotte. Whether the novels in question deal with nuclear, reconstructed, or single-parent families, there is a common denominator that links them together: fragmentation. The fictional family circle is characterized by breakdown and dismemberment, which are suggested primarily on a thematic level. This thesis looks to examine the factors that trigger family breakdown; fundamental factors that permeate the novels under consideration. In the first section, we look at violence and its disastrous effect on family dynamics. Violence constitutes an external threat that is progressively internalized, and represents, nonetheless, a menace to family harmony. In the second section, we look at the effect of parental deprivation, from mothers and fathers respectively, as well as the influence of the trials and tribulations of adolescence on the family unit. In the third section, we examine the concepts of unification and cohesion, through an analysis of love and creation within the family. We look to see if these impulses are capable of bringing about reconciliation and family solidarity.
