The expansionist urges of Anglo Americans of the 1800s accompanied cries of "manifest destiny" and feelings of racial superiority. The Texas Rangers emerged as a citizen militia group whose goal was to keep order in the disputed borderlands between Texas and Mexico. Though traditionally seen as heroes of western lore, this study seeks to establish the roots of racism within their ranks through a comparative study involving the Ku Klux Klan. This study seeks to establish the common strands found in racist organizations and expose the racist actions of the Texas Rangers, commonly held in folklore to be law-keeping heroes.
