This thesis examines the rhetorical accomplishments of Anne Dutton, an eighteenth-century female Calvinist theologian, making a case for her inclusion in the canon of rhetorical history and theory. It uses rhetorical criticism and analysis to examine Dutton's discussions on the appropriate rhetorical role for Christian women in the public and private spheres and her functioning as a competent Calvinist theologian in the eighteenth century.

The thesis is divided into four chapters. Chapter One is an introduction that outlines the conversations that are taking place within the field of rhetorical history and theory regarding the historical accomplishments of women and their place in the canon. This chapter also gives a brief biographical sketch of the life of Dutton and her rhetorical and literary works, and it details her importance as a female Calvinist theologian and writer to chronicling the evolution of women's rhetorical history and theory. Chapter Two discusses the influence of English Evangelism on the distinct character of various forms women's rhetorical activity in the eighteenth century. Chapter Two also explores Dutton's functioning as a theorist of rhetoric by examining her tract A Letter To such of the Servants of Christ, who May have any Scruples about the Lawfulness of PRINTING any Thing written by a Woman.

Chapter Three examines a letter written to prominent theologian John Wesley entitled A Letter to the Reverend Mr. John Wesley, In Vindication of the Doctrines of Absolute, Unconditional Election, Particular Redemption, Special Vocation, and Final Perseverance. In this tract, Dutton's role as a competent Calvinist theologian and exegete of Scripture is highlighted using a comparative analysis of John Calvin's Institutes.
