Towards a postmodern divinity: The role of language in contemporary theology.
Armstrong, Craig Warren.
Towards a postmodern divinity: The role of language in contemporary theology.
- 59 p.
Adviser: Lyn Johnson.
Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fresno, 2007.
As postmodernity has seemingly put an end to religious dialogue within academia, and as questions of identity, autonomy, and truth are being asked both within academia and without, it has become increasingly unclear whether or not there is room for faith in any intellectual or reasonable discussion. This paper examines the arguments of David Tracy and Jean Luc Marion---two scholars whose sole objective is to understand how postmodern literary and philosophical theories can be reconciled with contemporary theology. This paper also looks at John D. Caputo and a memoriam he has written that suggests interdisciplinary work as a promising avenue of academic exploration. The aim of this paper is to illustrate that an opening has been made in the wake of the postmodern movement, an opening that optimistically leaves room for what Jacques Derrida has termed the "to come."
