Blood on the Early Modern Stage: Marriage, Murder, Mythmaking examines the transformation of blood to a visual language of domesticity in early modern England in response to the Protestant Reformation and Renaissance discoveries in science and medicine. Through representations of cultural practices including marriage, mourning, and revenge, Renaissance dramatists reclaimed blood from humoral medicine as a visual medium for family and national identity. This project focuses on blood in domestic spaces, giving particular attention to the crucial purpose of blood in Renaissance definitions of gender, sexuality, home, and homeland.

I argue that blood was the common visible element in religious, medical, and political change in post-Reformation England. These changes shaped the boundaries and nature of the Renaissance family onstage. Domestic rites represented by blood onstage ranged from menstruation, marital consummation, childbirth, and healing therapies to domestic violence and murder. Ultimately, this project establishes the Renaissance poetics of domesticity as a function of the simultaneous intimacy and violence inherent to blood.

By focusing on the stage property of the bloody handkerchief, this project broadens its scope from the marriage bed to the London middle class and, finally, to the emerging proto-national identity of Protestant England in contrast to Catholic Spain. Dramatists including Kyd, Shakespeare, Webster, and the anonymous authors of London domestic tragedies embraced blood as the essence of domestic life on the Renaissance stage, and as the primary link between the family and a larger model of religious and national identity. I also compare English theatrical attitudes towards blood and family with Spanish Siglo de Oro dramatists Lope de Vega and Calderon de la Barca. Blood on the Early Modern Stage demonstrates the unique power of blood in public discourses of medicine, religion, and justice to reveal a changing view of the domestic space as one that begins and ends with blood.
