The 8.4 million Vietnam era veterans are the largest cohort of living U.S. veterans, constituting 32% of all living veterans. Half are age 65 or over. Yet, relatively little is known about the long-term effects of military service in Vietnam on mental and physical health, or on needs for Veteran's Administration (VA) services and benefits. I used a nationally representative survey of veterans to examine mental health, physical health, and use of VA medical and education benefits. My overarching research question was: drawing on life-course theory, among a cohort of Vietnam era veterans, how does mental health, physical health, and use of VA services and benefits, differ between those who served in Vietnam and those who served elsewhere?

I used nationally representative survey data from the 2001 National Survey of Veterans (NSV), conducted by the VA. I restricted the data to veterans of the Vietnam era. Vietnam era veterans in the 2001 NSV (n=7,914): 3,937 served in Vietnam; 3,977 served elsewhere. The exposure variable indicated whether the veteran served in Vietnam or elsewhere. I examined eight mental health outcomes; ten physical health measures, and six VA benefit and service use outcomes. Analyses included bivariate comparisons and multiple logistic regression. Multivariate models controlled for sociodemographic characteristics of veterans including age, gender, education, race/ethnicity, income and occupational status. All analyses were weighted for national representation.

Controlling for other factors, veterans who served in Vietnam were at significantly higher risk of risk of reporting being diagnosed being treated for post traumatic stress disorder, having poorer self-reported health, being more likely to be impaired in an activity of daily living, being more likely to report being treated for high blood pressure, lung conditions, hearing aid, cancer, heart issues, stroke, rheumatism, and diabetes, being more likely to use VA services for medical care, mental health care, and being more likely to use education benefits (all p<.001). As these veterans continue to age, they will need substantial mental health and medical services over their older lifetimes. Policymakers and practitioners need to plan for services to address these needs.
