In an age of many new "sciences", beliefs held about links between human physiognomy and character permeated Victorian society, and were manifested in both the art and literature of the day. Frith and Dickens are prime examples of individuals who subscribed heavily to the tenet that one's personality traits, from noble to criminal, could be revealed through one's physical features and manner of dress. Their subjects' outward appearances could be "read" by the public as indications of character types. In fact, their success may have been due to society's avid interest in physiognomy and related fields.
