This study is an introduction to the comparative morphology and evolutionary history of tetragnathid spiders. This dissertation is organized into the following three chapters: Chapter 1 provides a taxonomic revision of the genus Metabus O. P.-Cambridge, 1899. This genus previously included nine species: the type M. gravidus O. P.-Cambridge, 1899 (junior synonym of Leucauge ocellata (Keyserling, 1864)) from Central America and eight species from Chile. In this chapter, the classification of the Metabus species-complex is revised and two new genera, with three new species and five new combinations, are described. Allende gen. nov. is created for four Chilean species not congeneric with the type of Metabus. Further additions to the Chilean fauna are under the new genus Mollemeta gen. nov.---created for M. edwardsi (Simon, 1904) comb. nov.---and three new species of Chrysometa. Metabus now includes four species. The results show that Metabus as previously circumscribed is polyphyletic.

The second chapter proposes a phylogeny of Tetragnathidae with particular emphasis on the taxa classified as "metines" and provides an atlas for the morphology of 22 tetragnathid genera. Two hundred and thirteen characters were coded for 47 terminal taxa: 25 tetragnathids, 11 araneids, four nephilids, five taxa representing the "reduced piriform clade" (RPC), Uloborus glomosus (Walckenaer, 1842) representing Deinopoidea and Oncodamus decipiens Harvey, 1995 (Nicodamidae) as the root. The most parsimonious cladograms supported two monophyletic groups of tetragnathids, "leucaugines" and the "metine-tetragnathine complex". The metine-tetragnathine complex represented six lineages of metines and Tetragnathinae. However, these six lineages presented low nodal support values and were sensitive to differential character weighting. This phylogenetic study also found Tetragnathidae to be sister to Nephilidae on all cladograms and with all weighting criteria.

The third chapter addresses three central problems regarding the higher level systematics of tetragnathids: the placement of Tetragnathidae in Araneoidea, the exact limits of the family (e.g., are Nephila and their relatives part of this lineage?) and the monophyly and phylogenetic relationships of the various tetragnathid groups. Our results recovered monophyletic Tetragnathidae, Tetragnathinae, Leucauginae, the "Nanometa clade" and the "Meta clade". High nodal support values were obtained for these lineages, except the "Meta clade" (jackknife parsimony and posterior probabilities). The current debate of tetragnathid sister group relationships with other araneoid spiders remains unresolved, however tetragnathids and nephilids were never recovered as sister taxa. Tetragnathidae is sister to some members of the "reduced piriform clade" (which was paraphyletic on all analyses). Bayesian analyses found Nephilidae as sister to Araneidae and parsimony analyses found Nephilidae closely related to some taxa of the "reduced piriform clade". (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
