The MRR study in Tatochila mercedis arctodice obtained low recapture numbers. T. mercedis arctodice was abundant during September 2002, and there was a small peak in March. Males of Tatochila mercedis arctodice were captured more often than females.

The present investigation focuses on community ecology of the butterfly fauna in Cotopaxi National Park (CNP) of Ecuador. A total of 11 genera, 4 families and 16 species of diurnal butterflies, was collected. Life cycles of 6 species and host plants were determined.

Mark-release-recapture (MRR) experiments were carried out to study populations of Colias euxanthe alticola and Tatochila mercedis arthodice in two locations. In Limpiopungo, Colias euxanthe alticola reached two population peaks. Males were captured more frequently than females, 60% in Limpiopungo and 68.5% in Control Norte.

At Limpiopungo, the daily survival probability for Colias euxanthe alticola males was 0.91 and showed no difference between the dry and wet season. For females the survival probability was 0.88 during the dry season, and 0.86 during the wet season. The recapture probability in males and females at Limpiopungo ranged from 0.08 (SE = 0.05) to 0.20 (SE = 0.15). Two models, ϕ (sex) p (season) and ϕ (sex) p (t), were supported strongly by AICc weight values.

The daily survival probability for males of Colias euxanthe alticola in Control Norte was 0.95 (dry season) and 0.96 (wet season). For females the probability was 0.93 (dry and wet season). The recapture probability in males and females ranged from 0.0001 (SE=0.0002) to 0.41. (SE=0.17). The real function parameters of model ϕ (sex) p ( t) were supported by the data.

Estimated male population of Colias euxanthe alticola ranged from 27--860 individuals in Limpiopungo and from 250--1200 individuals in Control Norte. The maximum life span recorded was around 40 days. The mean lifespan for males in Limpiopungo was 12 days (wet season), 10.6 days (dry season); and for females 6.6 days (wet season), and 7.8 days (dry season). The mean life span in Control Norte was 24.5 days (wet season), and 19.5 (dry season); and for females it was 13.8 days (wet and dry season).
