Reed, Isaac Ariail.
Outline of an interpretive sociology: Meaning, theory, and history in social analysis.
- 266 p.
Adviser: Jeffrey C. Alexander.
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Yale University, 2007.
Presents an interpretive approach to the justification and production of sociological knowledge. First the problem of comprehending and explaining social action is introduced, and the interpretive aspect of this problem explored in critical dialogue with scientific realism and normative social theory. Second, a meaning-centered approach to the core sociological concepts of structure and action is developed, using the theoretical root metaphors of text and performance, so as change the shape and nature of sociological explanation. Third, the hermeneutic understanding of the legitimacy and utility of abstract theory implied by such an approach is explicitly developed, with reference to a distinction between world-building and world-disclosing theory, which reforms and reframes the distinction between analytic and ideal-typical theory in social science.
