This project demonstrates that the primary impact of parish closings and mergers is not emotional distress, but rather the risk that adolescents from closed parishes will see their Roman Catholic faith as irrelevant and unresponsive as a result of not understanding the process of parish closings and not being involved in the process. The project concludes with concrete recommendations for parish leaders based on the professional literature about contemporary Roman Catholic youth and interviews conducted as part of this study in which adolescents report what was helpful or not helpful during the process.
