Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Fresno, 1989.
This research study concentrates on Sino-United States rapprochement and Chinese representation in the United Nations. For more than twenty years, since the establishment of the People's Republic of China, Communist China has been excluded from the UN. Without Sino-U.S. rapprochement, Communist China could not effectively enter the UN, let alone gain status in international politics.Subjects--Topical Terms:

This thesis contains three components: First, it adopts a contextual approach to study the policy of both Peking and Washington in the Korean War, the Taiwan Strait Crises, and the Vietnam War. Second, a global view of China's foreign policy--Washington's withdrawal from the Vietnam War, the Sino-Soviet dispute, and Sino-Japanese relations--is discussed to evaluate the redirection of Peking's policy toward Washington. Third, after Communist China entered the UN, Peking utilized the UN to pursue national unification, national interests, and leadership in the Third World.
