Research in multi-echelon inventory theory by IBM and The Wharton School resulted in Optimizer, a system for the flexible and optimal control of service levels and inventory. The inherent complexity of the problem required development of unusual data structures and memory management techniques. Optimizer operates with 20% less inventory while maintaining or improving service levels and is a highly flexible system for managerial control.
