The foundation for the understanding of English literature--its Anglo-Saxon origins are offered here with modern translations of three riddle poems (which show that the English sense of humor hasn't changed much), "The Seafarer", and "The Dream of the Rood". In sections of Beowulf, the original Old English is cunningly interwoven with contemporary English to offer both an understanding and a sense of the power of the poetic language of the original.
