Thesis (M.S.)--Lamar University - Beaumont, 2024.
Urbanization is a critical global phenomenon with far-reaching implications for land use, environmental sustainability, and socio-economic development. This thesis focused on conducting a comprehensive spatial analysis of urbanization in Jefferson County, Texas, between year 2000 to 2020. Remote sensing data and GIS techniques were employed to examine the patterns and trends of urban expansion in the region. By examining the patterns and trends of urban expansion during this period, the research shed light on the dynamics of urban growth and its implications for land use, environment, and society. The study commenced with the collection and preprocessing of multi-temporal satellite imagery and relevant socio-economic data for the study area. The research also outlined land cover into urban and non-urban classes, facilitating a detailed examination of urban expansion across the different time periods. Through change detection analysis, the spatial patterns and trends of urbanization were identified and quantified, allowing for an understanding of the scale and direction of growth. As urbanization is influenced by a complex interplay of factors, this thesis delved into the driving forces behind the observed urban expansion in Jefferson County. Overall, this thesis aspires to contribute to the broader understanding of urbanization dynamics, particularly in the context of Jefferson County, Texas. By utilizing remote sensing data and GIS techniques, the research provides valuable insights for policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders, enabling them to make informed decisions for fostering sustainable and livable cities.
