This thesis, Evaluating Daylighting Exposure in Classrooms Architecture, addressed inadequate daylighting design at Lake Forest Elementary located in Gainesville, FL. Students in this school predominantly had a low economic status. Much should be done architecturally to improve learning outcomes in this traditional low preforming group. Guzowski (2000) mentions that not only does good light help to illuminate, but it also affects those who enter and engage in a space. In addition, this study was significant because, according to the Texas Association of School Boards (2022), students with the most exposure to natural daylight progressed 20 percent faster in math and 26 percent faster in reading.The methods used in this study were an analysis of daylighting models and simulations through comparative design, demonstration, and evaluation. The research question was, which design had the highest probability to increase lighting and learning conditions? This study produced three classroom designs that maximized the use of natural light, clarified the facilities' relationship to proper daylighting for the average classroom, and tested which was most effective in improving learning. These models were tested with a luminance simulation tool.This study found that glazing along the north and south of the building was most effective. The north-facing glazing received less daylighting and more shading from the sun; therefore, the Wall-to-Window Ratio ranged from 20%-40%. The south-facing glazing received consistent daylighting; therefore, the Wall-To-Window Ratio was at most 20%. Energy Trust of Oregan (2017) recommended 30 to 50 footcandles (300- 500 lux) to properly luminate a classroom for an elementary school.Although Wall-To-Window Ratios were implemented in the design, the north and south glazing of the building continued to produce inadequate lighting for the space. Utilities One (2023) indicated that skylights maximized natural light. As a result, skylights may be an option if any other daylighting systems fail to reach the room's luminance goal.{A0}
